Day 63 Low Carb Diet

March 7, 2012

We are still in Seattle and had a great time with our two children ages 23 and 24. It is pretty cool when they are grown up and you can go out and hang out with them for the whole weekend. Of course I am not even close to staying on my low carb diet this weekend.
We did some wine tasting yesterday and that was a lot of fun. Red Wine has very few carbs and no fat, so that worked out pretty well. I also brought a bunch of different meats and cheeses for us to snack on while we were doing the wine tasting. The have virtually no carbs either, but they do have some fat in them. All in all it was a fun day, but my other meals I did not do as well.
For the day I consumed 3119 calories, 330 carbs and 101 fat grams. So breakfast and dinner really did me in. I did not seem to care about what I ate and went a little overboard yesterday. I had a one bad day, but that does not mean I will have to continue with more bad days. I will get back on the low carb plan or the low fat plan and I will start losing weight again.
The important thing when you have a bad day is to not compound it with a bunch of bad days. Recover from the day and learn from your mistakes. If you beat yourself up, then you will probably eat more the next day and then continue a bad cycle.
Yesterday was also my day off from exercising. We were so busy going from place to place I do not know when I would have had time to do any exercise. Again this is only temporary, today I will do some sort of exercise and tomorrow I will do another type of exercise. It is good to take a day off and not have to do too much.

Day 62 Low Carb Diet

March 7, 2012

This weekend we are in Seattle visiting our son for his birthday. Since there are quite a few nice restaurants in Seattle I will probably fall off the low carb diet for a few days. Since I have not been losing any weight for over a month now, I think that my body has gotten used to the low carb diet. I am thinking about changing things up this week.
Since my body has gotten used to the low carb diet, I am planning on not worrying too much about the carbs this week and I am going to try low fat this week. I know that I said that I would stick to the plan, but this has been getting frustrating. So I am going to through a wrench into the plan and see what happens. Every day I worry about how many carbs I am eating and I have not worried at all about the calories or the fat grams.
So this week I am going to try to get my fat grams below 50 fat grams per day. I will start this on Sunday and see if the change will help me lose weight. I think that if we do the same thing every day that our body gets used to it and then it adapts and we can’t lose weight. I am not giving up on the low carb diet, but I am making a change for a week and then the following week I will go back to low carb diet. That way if I go back and forth between the low carb diet and the low fat diet then possibly I will trick my body and lose weight each week.
Yesterday I was back to the P90X for my exercise of the day. Next week I will be starting a new video for the week. I have gotten into a groove with the current video, so I think that it will be good to change it up. They talk about changing your routine for the exercise also, that way your body will find new challenges and not adapt to what you are doing. So I think that I might be on the right track for changing my diet up.
Yesterday I blew the whole diet and consumed 2294 calories, 108 carbs and 102 fat grams. So it was not like I went out and had a ton of carbs for the day, but it was more than the 50. On my carb counter app, it says that someone my size should have 238 carbs per day. I am way below that, so I think that I am still doing pretty well.

Day 61 Low Carb Diet

March 7, 2012

I am on the first day of my last month of my low carb diet plan. I hope that you have been enjoying my blogs for the past two months. I have tried to be as honest as I can with you, so that you can learn from my successes and my failures. I have not been perfect by any means, but I think that I have done a good job of staying on the low carb diet for the first two months. I have also done a good job of staying on my exercise program and I am seeing good results from doing this.
I also hope that you have started your low carb diet and if you have to post comments and your experiences on this website. I know that different people are going to see different results in their low carb diet, so please post your experiences. My goal is not only for me to lose weight and get into better shape, but for you to lose weight and get in better shape too. If you have any questions for me, go ahead and send those in and I will do my best to give you a good answer.
Yesterday I was back on the treadmill and my achillies was feeling fine, so I decided to kick it up a notch. The first mile I average a little over a 10 minute mile and then the second mile I picked up the pace and ran at a 9 minute mile pace. I was not sure if I was going to be able to keep it up for the full mile, but I did. Then I took a little break and walked for .05 miles, and then I ran the rest of the way at about a 9 minute and 30 second pace. It felt good to know that I could run at that pace again. Now I just have to be able to run the whole 3 miles at that pace without walking.
I consumed 1688 calories, 28 carbs and 72 fat grams. I thought that I would lose a little more weight with the low carbs and fat grams, but I did not lose anything. I weighed in at 216.4 again, so nothing great, but at least I did not go up in weight. This weekend we are going over to Seattle to visit our son for his birthday. There are a lot of good restaurants over there, so I am probably going to fall off the wagon a little bit. I figure that I have not been losing weight anyway, so I am going to enjoy myself this weekend. I am not going to wild, but I am not going to stay under 50 carbs this weekend.

Day 60 Low Carb Diet

March 7, 2012

Well I have finished two months of my low carb diet and things are going well in some ways and not what I expected in other ways. Sometimes having high expectations makes it tougher to celebrate accomplishments that do not meet those expectations. I am going to finish this low carb diet out for the full 90 days, but I think that I am going to lower my expectations and raise my carb intake goal of 50 per day to 100 per day.
My goal for the first 60 days was to go from 228 pounds down to 210 pounds. Well I weighed in at 216.4 on day 60, so for the last 30 days I only lost .2 pounds. After a great start in the first 30 days, things have really slowed down. Sure I have not been perfect during this past 30 days, but I have been relatively good. I would guess that over the full month that I have averaged real close to 50 carbs or less. I am very disappointed that I did not lose any weight, but what am I going to do.
My next 60 day goal is to go from a 40” waist to 37”. I did not hit that goal either, but I did continue to improve over the last 30 days. I started the month at 38.5” and I am now down to 37.75”, so I lost another three quarter of an inch. I am pretty happy with that, because I am still seeing improvement. My 90 day goal is to get down to 36” and I do not think that I will be able to get there in 30 days. But I still have time on my side; I do not have to stop at 90 days. I will keep doing the P90X exercises and the ab-ripper. I know that I am looking better and feeling stronger.
My last 60 day goal for the low carb diet and exercise program is to increase my bicep size from 14.5” to 15.75”. I measured in at 15.5” this morning, so that was a good improvement also. My 90 day goal on the biceps is to get them up to 16”, so I do think that is a possibility. I only have to gain another half an inch, so again if I do not achieve this goal by the end of 90 days, then I will keep working on the P90X and staying on a partial low carb diet.
Yesterday I consumed 1865 calories, 52 carbs and 110 fat grams. I am still staying on track on most of the days. It really is not that hard to stay on the low carb diet on most days. It is usually when we go out to dinner that it becomes a bigger challenge. So do the best that you can and keep improving and don’t give up.

Day 59 Low Carb Diet

February 29, 2012

I have good news today. After going to the physical therapist last week for my injured achillies tendon it is feeling much better. She gave me some different stretching exercises that I have not use in the past. She gave me some stretches that I stay in for about 10 minutes. It hurts and is tedious to be in the same position for that long, but I am really feeling the difference. She also gave me a couple of exercises to strengthen my hamstrings and they are hard to do since my hamstrings are weak. But I am getting better at them and it is helping me recover.

I went back to the cardio exercises yesterday. I did my 30 minutes on the stationary bike at level 13 and it is a very good workout. Since my achillies was felling so well I decided to go back to the treadmill. I was a little tentative, but once I got going I knew that it was going to be okay. I ran for a mile, then walked for .05 miles, ran for another mile, walked for .05 miles and then finished up for a total of 3 miles. Remember to exercise while you are doing the low carb diet.

I averaged 9:59 minutes per mile, which at this point in time is good for me. I have not been able to run in over two weeks, so I am very happy with that time. My goal is to get it down to under 9 minutes per mile, but that will take some time. I just feels good to be able to run and not have pain in my achillies when I am finished. I will keep doing these exercises that she gave me so I do not reinjure this tendon.

For the low carb diet, I consumed 1681 calories, 34 carbs and 105 fat grams for the day. So not only did I get my carbs under 50 for the day, I lowered my calorie consumption by quite a bite also. That was just a side benefit, I was not really trying to get the calories down there, it just happened. When staying on a low carb diet you will probably just naturally lower your calories also. Since there are a lot of carbs in sugar, you will reduce your sugar intake by quite a bit. That is very good for your body.

I weighed in this morning at 217.2, so unless I cut off an arm today I am not going to drop down to 210 by the morning. At this point I would just like to be under 216.8, since that is where I was at, at the end of January. It would not be a big success on the weight loss front, but I am losing in my waist and gaining strength and that is more important.

Day 58 Low Carb Diet

February 28, 2012

Still no progress in the weight loss department. I weighed in this morning at 217.8, so not only did I not lose weight, I gained .2 pounds from yesterday. I am wondering if my body has just gotten used to the low carb diet and I need to try something else. But as I have stated before, I am going to stick it out for the entire 90 days and at that time I will evaluate what has happened and what I will do from there.

I always have to keep in mind that I am still losing size in my waist and that to me is very important. If I can get rid of my belly fat and love handles then this will be a very successful venture for me. I only have a little over a month to go on the low carb diet; it will be interesting to see what will happen by the end.

Last week I discovered a company that sells low carb foods on the internet. Anything from bread to noodles, so I ordered some rolls, taco shells and the low carb noodles. Last night I had my first pasta dinner this year. I made spaghetti last night with the low carb noodles. These noodles are made out of tofu and smell a little fishy when you take out of the package, but after I rinsed them off and put them in the microwave the smell went away. I then poured the spaghetti sauce with meat on the noodles and it tasted great.

I never have tried tofu before, I thought that I looked disgusting and I never saw a need to eat it. With it covered with sauce and meat it tasted just like other pasta, except it might have been a little chewier. That did not bother me at all and I look forward to more meals with them. I also had a roll that I toasted and buttered and it tasted pretty good too. I am normally a white bread kind of guy and this tasted more on the wholesome side, but at least I was eating bread. If you are interested in checking this store out go to locarbu and see if there is anything that interests you.

Yesterday I consumed 1773 calories, 70 carbs and 99 fat grams. So I am not totally hitting my goal of 50, but I am still way under 100 carbs for the day. Maybe I have been pushing myself too hard during this process, so I am going to give myself some slack and keep it under a 100, with a goal of getting under 50. I went out with our youth pastor today for lunch and had a Panini sandwich and it was very good. I am not going to go off the low carb diet, but I am going to give myself a little bit of a break.

My exercise was back to P90X:90-Day Extreme Home Workout Program yesterday and it went fine. I am still improving on exercise by at least one. So if I did 26 push-ups last week, then I am doing 27 this week. I figure that if I keep adding to it I will continue to get stronger and leaner.

Day 57 Low Carb Diet

February 28, 2012

This morning was both good and bad news. The bad news is that I ended up gaining a little weight for the week. I weighed in at 217.6, which means that I gained 1.2 pounds this week. Sure I was not perfect this weekend, but during the week I thought that I was doing awesome. I have never eaten as many salads as I have during the past 57 days and I am not losing any damn weight. This gets me to think about quitting the low carb diet and try something else or just go back to what I was eating before.

But I made a 90 day commitment to myself and to you, so I am going to stick it out for the full 90 days and see what the final results are. I hope if you are doing the low carb diet that you will stay on it for the full 90 days also and see what type of results that you are getting. It is easy to say, “this is not working like I wanted it to, so I am going to quit.” It is really hard to say, “this is not working like I wanted it to, but I am going to stay with it and see what happens.”

I have usually taken the easy way out when it comes to dieting, but this time I have made a commitment to not just myself, but to you too. If I am going to spend all this time logging my food intake, exercise, writing blogs and everything else. I am not going to let that work on the low carb diet go to waste; I am going to see it to the end.

The good news is that I did lose another quarter of an inch in my waist, so I am now down to 37.75”. That is awesome, I guess that I would be happier to not lose as much weight and lose the inches than the other way around. I think that I would be more upset if I was down to 212, but my waist was still at 39”. I am not sure if I my waist is going down because of the low carb diet or P90X:90-Day Extreme Home Workout Program and the running and biking. I am guessing that it is a combination of everything.

Yesterday I consumed 2304 calories, 37 carbs and 152 fat grams. So I am back under the 50 carb goal for the low carb diet. We were still out of town and I was able to rein myself back to what I need to be. I did notice that since I was out of town and I forgot to bring my Gold Standard Chocolate protein Shake, I was hungry a lot more throughout the day. Now that I am home and have it, it is great to have one when I feel a hunger pang.

We went skiing again yesterday for our exercise. It was another great day in Montana for skiing, but since we were driving home we cut the skiing a little short. That was okay, because both of our legs were still tired from skiing the other day.
